Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
