Reported Plot to Attack Belgian Prime Minister Foiled

Belgium's PM Bart de Wever

Belgium's authorities have detained three people allegedly involved in plotting an assault on the nation's premier, Bart de Wever.

Federal prosecutors described the reported scheme as a "jihadist-inspired terrorist attack" targeting the PM and additional politicians.

During searches conducted in the Deurne area of Antwerp, close to the PM's private residence, officials uncovered a suspected homemade bomb and indications that the accused were intending to use a drone.

While the planned victims of the strike were not publicly identified by the legal authorities, Second-in-command Maxime Prevot revealed that Belgium's leader was included in the targets.

"Reports of a premeditated attack targeting Prime Minister Bart de Wever is deeply alarming," the deputy prime minister stated in a update on X on the day of the arrests.

"This underscores that we are dealing with a very real terrorist threat and that we have to remain vigilant," he continued.

The three people taken into custody on suspicion of terrorism-related attempted murder and engagement in the operations of a terrorist group all are based in Antwerp, per the federal prosecutors. They were had birth years in the early 2000s.

By late Thursday, one suspect was let go, while two others were undergoing questioning and likely to be presented before a court on the next day.

The prosecution revealed that the individuals were detained after a judge directed raids of their homes in the city by law enforcement assisted by explosives-trained dogs.

Throughout these raids that they located a object which closely resembled a homemade bomb, lead prosecutor Ann Fransen stated at a news conference on the day of the events.

Investigations also uncovered a "bag of steel balls" and a 3D printer, with "indications that they intended to use a drone to attach a payload", she continued.

Fransen disclosed that there had been 80 extremist probes initiated in the country this year - exceeding the total number of investigations in the previous year.

In April, five suspects were found guilty for a previous year's plan to attack the prime minister while he was holding the position of Antwerp's mayor.
